DOCTOR OF MEDICINE AS A PROFESSION

This task of finding someone in the medical field is very beneficial to me. My next-door neighbor is a doctor of medicine. Despite the fact that she only recently obtained her license and has been working for only 5 months, I know she has a lot to say about her profession. Dr. Leona Leiyn, a licensed general practitioner of medicine, is 28 years old. She was deployed and was working as a hospitalist for emergency admissions at a rural hospital.

What are your struggles in making it to who you are today?

According to Dr. Leona, choosing a career is one of the most difficult decisions that any student must make. The important thing is to understand what it takes to enter the profession you want. Many students who aspire to be doctors only see the title at its most basic level. Dr. Leona believes that she can make a difference in people’s lives. She aspires to have a positive impact and to be able to assist others. She is clearly on the right track based on that.

Her chosen profession of medicine is motivated by a desire to help others. As a result, she is expected to prioritize others. It also allows her to continue learning after medical school. She considered a medical degree as a career that embodies one to be admired. It is also critical to be realistic about them. Admission to medical school is competitive, as is the course work that follows. It will require discipline as well as critical thinking. Personal accountability is essential in such circumstances.

Why do you want to be a doctor? Can you describe a little about your career path?

This is one of the most difficult questions to answer for most newly hired medical practitioners in a hospital. In fact, if you don’t answer this question correctly, you’ll face burnout for the rest of your career. Period.

Being a medical doctor is a fantastic career. It’s stimulating and fascinating. Medical doctors have considerable control over their schedules and time. Every day, medical doctors get to assist people in resolving problems. Medical professionals witness humanity at its best and worst.

However, becoming a medical doctor is not easy. This is not a career for people who do not want to work more than 50 hours per week, including holidays. This is not a job for people who enjoy moving around a lot. This is not a career for those who lack responsibility and focus.

Being a doctor is the best and highest pursuit of a life’s work for someone who enjoys problem solving, connecting with and being surrounded by human stories, and being a curious interrogator of data. That’s exactly who Dr. L is.

The most amazing thing is that you could have a completely different set of strengths and still be a doctor, which is your best and highest use in society. You could be the most brilliant, precise tactile hand worker in the world, with exceptional geospatial awareness and a strong desire to save lives.

What do you think is your  role in the public?

Doctors save lives, but their value extends far beyond that. Doctors also make a difference by assisting patients in minimizing pain, recovering from disease more quickly, or learning to live with a disabling injury. Even if a patient cannot be cured, their ability to enjoy life makes a significant difference to them and their families. If they can return to work after an illness, it benefits their employer as well. And that is only a small part of what makes doctors so important in society.

As the saying goes, “some heroes don’t wear capes; we call them doctors.” This one-liner, said by an anonymous person, is something we’ve all experienced at some point in our lives. Doctors do play an important role in our lives. Doctors at maternity hospitals and morgues both certify the absolute first and last event of a human being. A doctor is a person who has extensive knowledge in the field of medical science and who applies and dedicates his knowledge to identifying the patient’s medical problem and then using his skill to prevent or cure it.

Roles need to be highlighted are as follows:

1. Preventive Medicine: As Dr. Leona pointed out, no one wants to become ill, disabled, or helpless. Preventing illness or injury is a better option because it is less expensive, better for our health, and we lose less money if we don’t get sick as frequently. Preventive care is also beneficial to society as a whole. Many people in the United States and around the world are unable to afford drugs, hospital stays, or surgery. Doctors bridge the health gap between rich and poor populations by promoting preventive medicine and keeping people healthy.
2. Stopping Pandemics: Throughout history, black death and smallpox have wiped out millions of people; polio paralyzed thousands in the twentieth century. Doctors avoid disasters by working to contain potential epidemics. Individual doctors do not fly solo in these situations. Fighting plagues necessitates funds and national and international organizations. Doctors and other medical professionals, on the other hand, are critical to the fight.
3. Economic Impact: A medical practice is a small company. Most doctors employ staff, rent or buy office space, pay contractors for repairs, and generally improve the economic health of the community while improving the health of their patients. In 2018, Illinois had 30,000 doctors, who supported 146,000 jobs and indirectly supported another 250,000. In towns too small to support most other industries, a hospital or medical practice can be an economic driver.
4. Educating People: There’s no shortage of medical nonsense floating around the internet in this day and age. Someone knows a miracle cure for whatever ails you. Whatever you’re afraid of, some website will scream that it’s a lot worse than you think. Doctors have the authority and knowledge to combat fake medical news. It’s not just about teaching patients how to stay healthy. Sometimes it’s explaining that there is no cure and that it’s pointless to spend money trying to find one.
5. Shaping Health Policy: State, local, and federal governments all have a significant impact on the health of our communities. Is it safe to drink our water? Is it safe to eat our food? Is there a local treatment program for alcoholics or painkiller addicts? How does the government mobilize doctors and other professionals if contagious disease is a threat? Doctors are just one of many voices that influence public policy. They do, however, hold a unique position of respect and trust, which they can use to pressure governments to implement healthcare policies that truly benefit the public.

Can you give any career advice for anyone who dreamed of becoming a doctor someday.

I would first ensure that the individual understands what it takes to become a doctor. Do they realize that they must perform exceptionally well in college, preferably at a higher ranked college, in order to be admitted to a medical school where they will spend four years and more cash than ever.  After medical school, they go through a three-year residency/internship for low pay, competing for their specialty. More desirable specialties are more competitive, and they may be pushed to a less desirable field. Internships become less desirable as test scores fall and medical schools fall in rank.

My advice is to avoid becoming a doctor solely for financial reasons. Pursue it only if it is something you are passionate about. (By the way, medical schools recognize this to some extent because they prefer someone who has always wanted to be a doctor.) If you’re not sure if you have the passion, try working in a doctor’s office and volunteering at a hospital for a few days.
